Kate studied 3-Dimensional Design (ceramics) at
Loughborough College of Art & Design graduating in 1984. Following a year as Artist-in-Residence at a school
she produced her pieces as part of the Nottingham City Artists group
exhibiting regularly and selling through a number of London outlets
including Liberty's. She has worked as an Art Teacher in secondary education and also in the theatre on costumes. During the time she worked at the Sydney Opera House she also studied 'real' shoe making for 3 years part time. She now works part-time to enable her to get back to creating her current work of ceramic shoes. The shoes are made in pairs and are life-size - approximately a size 6. (26cm long x 14cm high) They are hand-built using thinly rolled slabs of clay. Decoration is applied while the clay is soft in the form of impressed patterns and sprigged mouldings. Very thin sheets of clay are manipulated to look like fabric in the form of frills, bows and rosettes. Each bead on the shoes is individually hand rolled. The pieces are then fired multiple times, using different temperatures for clay, underglaze colours, glazes and the metallic lustres. |
